There are many fun and exciting things to do in the area if you are bringing family or partners to the area*.
Warkworth is at the hub of the “Kowhai Coast”, packed with wineries, beaches, and Sheep Worlds (actually, there’s just the one).
SheepWorld is good for visitors to New Zealand: see sheep being shorn, learn how dogs muster sheep (do you know the difference between an eye dog and a huntaway?). There’s a farm walk, adventure park, and eel pond where you can feed the eels. Finish the visit off with a lamb burger in the cafe. Not to be missed.
Take the ferry to Kawau Island where you can visit historic Mansion House, hike the peaceful wilds, and take a midday nap among the peacocks.
There are a number of local wineries, however not all of them have open cellar doors for tasting and purchases. See the Matakana Coast website for more information. We will, however, take this moment to plug our friends at Heron’s Flight. We highly recommend their Dolcetto. They are very friendly and serve some great food as well. We also recommend a visit to the Leigh Sawmill Brewery. They make GREAT beer.
There are very popular markets on in Matakana on Saturday and SUnday mornings, two in the village and one at the Country Park, another kilometer down the road. Live music, local foods, produce and craft.
Beaches: Omaha, Pakiri, and Goat Island are within a half hour of Warkworth. All are recommended. You can ride horses on Pakiri, or dive/snorkel/glassbottomboat in the marine reserve on Goat Island.
*Please keep in mind that due to space and budget constraints, we are unable to feed or accommodate family or partners at NZ Fisheries Symposium. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
